Lush black rayon velvet and sheer floral lace make for the perfect wintertime late 1940s-early 1950s cocktail dress! The lovely neckline has scalloped panels of the sheer lace over each shoulder, backed with beige mesh for stability. Below the lace, a curving portrait collar drapes from shoulder to shoulder in front, and dips lower in back, trimmed with a sweet bow at the center. Darts shape the bust. A metal zipper fastens the side seam. Below the waist seam, the skirt has a straight silhouette in front, but in back a triangular, bias-cut panel from waist to hem creates a “bustle” effect. This center back panel is a bit longer than the rest of the skirt hem. We have lightened a few of our photos to try to show this better. The crepe-backed rayon velvet is unlined, and drapes beautifully! In very good condition, this elegant black velvet late 1940s-early 50s cocktail dress has 2 small mends in the right side seam, which are less-than-expertly done—see close-up photo.
