This belted ladies’ coat from the late 1940s in lightweight grey plaid wool features a large, pointed collar, wide, cuffed sleeves and large patch pockets with flaps. A single button closes the coat at the neck, and a single hook and loop fastener closes the waist. The narrow, self-fabric belt rests over rows of small, vertical tucks that shape the waist. In addition, vertical seams shape the coat from shoulders to hem, for a fit-and-flare silhouette. A large inverted pleat extends from the waist to the hem, at the center back of the coat. Shoulder pads create a classic 1940s squared shoulder line. The wool fabric is lighter than usual for a coat, more like the typical weight of a 3-season wool skirt suit, with a slightly crisp feel. The tiny windowpane plaid combines dove grey with subtle hints of pale pink and aqua. It is lined with taupe rayon crepe. In very good condition, this stylish 1940s coat has one tiny flaw/munch on the back of one sleeve, and some very faint yellowing to the inside of the collar (see close-up photos).
