Eugene Alexander
37 Bust Suit Skirt and Blazer Raw Silk Cream Gorgeous Copper/gold Quilted Trim Pencil Skirt 27 Inch Waist Made In Usa by Eugene Alexander$64.00
This vintage 1980's Eugene Alexander 2-piece designer suit is a WOW statement set. Made in Sarasota Florida it is classic beige with a unique blazer trimmed in copper gold and brown. The fabric appears to be a nubby raw silk although there is no existing fabric content label. Bronze copper and gold fabrics some quilted some flat and some folded are employed here with narrow gold metallic edges. That same gold metallic trim appears at the neckline the entire front flaps and at both edges of the sleeve cuffs.
Please use these measurements below to make sure this will fit you because sizing has changed so much over the decades.
For the Blazer:
Shoulder to shoulder is 15 inches.
Sleeve length is 26 inches including the quilted cuff.
Under sleeve length at 18 and 1/2 inches.
Armhole opening is 18 inches.
Bust is 37 and 1/2 inches.
Waist is 35 and 3/4 inches.
Full length is 21 and 1/4 inches.
Hemline width is 36 and 1/2 inches.
For the Skirt:
Waist is 26 inches.
Hip is 38 inches.
Full length is 24 and 3/4 inches.
Hemline width is 44 inches.

An asymmetrical front flap bears a stylized floral-inspired design. One of the most iconic Eugene Alexander designs is their water lily applique jacket. This appears to be a riff on that design with another floral pattern inspired by nature.
Those sleeve cuffs are quilted 2 inch wide fabric bronze on one side and gold on the underside with a gentle curve at the side of the wrist where they slightly overlap.
Five very hidden hooks and eyes close the front. Use the magnify feature on the flat photo to see those for yourself.
Both the blazer and the skirt are fully lined in a white shiny fabric as is shown in the photos. Even the lining is in Excellent Vintage condition just like the exterior fabrics of this set.
The skirt's waistband has a back zipper with a top hook and eye. Soft narrow pleats allow for ease of movement in both the front and back sides. A detailed back view is shown in these photos.
Puffy shoulders are achieved with soft gathers not shoulder pads.
Designer details are evident throughout in the fabric seams trim style and timeless appeal.
Freshly cleaned in "As New" Excellent Vintage condition the vintage Eugene Alexander suit is meant to be shown off.
Worn without the skirt the statement blazer will coordinate well with contemporary pieces in your existing wardrobe.
As you can tell from the photos there are no stains holes or wear at all evident in the fabric and no odors. All of the hooks and eyes are intact and the skirt zipper is in excellent working order. It comes to you from a home with no pets and no smokers.
According to the Vintage Fashion Guild "The Eugene Alexander label hit its stride in the 80's and early 90's. Many Hollywood and high profile political women/wives wore Eugene Alexander evening attire which was essentially the gist of their line. The most recognizable EA dress was the red dress that Julia Roberts wore to the opera in Pretty Woman. Sarah Jessica Parker wore a one shouldered vintage EA dress with the big flower in the recent Sex in the City movie. EA pieces sold at high end department stores like Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales and tended to run toward extravagance. When partner Alexander Wallace died in the mid 90's the line died out. With such a short production run the label is somewhat rare."
I also discovered these Sarasota designers Eugene Stutzman and Alexander Wallace broke into couture with a black velvet water lily jacket. Their factory located in an industrial section of downtown Sarasota made a splash with orders and special requests for what the two refer to as their "little works of art."
Their fashions artfully blended fantasy romance and grand theater. "A Eugene Alexander dress can dance right on the edge of costume but never falter in its true intention: making the wearer feel and look stunning." Dubbed by the host of the Entertainment Tonight TV show Mary Hart as "the celebrity's celebrity," Eugene Alexander fashions have been worn by many glamorous and influential style setter women.
Whitney Houston wore their stunning white and gold one shoulder gown. That same design in a shortened version was worn by Sarah Jessica Parker for a "Sex and the City" movie. A black pearl-studded dress by EA was worn by Elizabeth Taylor for the launch of her White Diamonds perfume. Loretta Lynn often wore their gowns for her concerts. That legendary long red velvet number Julia Roberts wore in Pretty Woman was born in the factory in downtown Sarasota.
For more fascinating history of these designers Google an article " From a Fashion Empire to a Cherry Pie Eugene Stutzman Lives to Create Sarasota’s Eugene Stutzman was the founder of a fashion company that dressed Whitney Houston Elizabeth Taylor Jane Fonda and many more." It was in the November 2017 issue of Sarasota Magazine and was written by Cooper Levey-Baker.
This Sarasota Magazine online version also has a link to two short videos. The first is a video recap of the Goshen Theater fashion show (from the Fall of 2017) and it has some highlights from the following museum presentation. The second is a short documentary about Stutzman’s life and work. For the fashion show they featured several fabulous and iconic gowns from Eugene Alexander. It is such an entertaining event to watch because it is very apparent the presenters models and audience all had a wonderful time.
I apologize to anyone who thinks I overdid this gushing description. Blame it on the fact I was amazed and proud to discover this was done by a hometown Sarasota designer team and that their clothing was made right here in Sarasota. How amazing is that!
