Mary Chess
30's Pastel Hand-Painted Velvet Bag with Gold-Leaf Detail$150.00
An exquisite and rare Mary Chess hand-painted and stenciled velvet bag!
I suspect this bag to have been a promotional piece from the early days of the Mary Chess perfume company circa late 1930's. I scoured the internet for any information about this bag, but could find none. I only found one other similar example that was described as made of 'carpet-like material'. The velvet has a sky blue ground color and has whimsical floral pattern hand-painted in pastel tones and there are still traces of the gold used in the hand-stenciling process. Unfortunately, the colors in these photos are a bit off, making the bag look 'sootier' than the actual tones. The velvet feel like silk but with a very short pile, and the bag is lined in pink silk satin with a small pocket and 'Mary Chess label inside. This is an envelope-style clutch bag with self-fabric covered button and loop closure. Condition is excellent, other than some soiling marks, especially on side seams (see pics).
