30's Royal Purple Asian Floral Print Silk Crepe Furisode Kimono

Showa period (vintage 1930s) Furisode style kimono which is a fancy kimono with long sleeves worn by a young unmarried woman or apprentice geisha girls. The long sleeves were thought to be alluring to attract men.

Furisode kimonos were often commissioned for a girl's 19th birthday "coming-of-age" ceremony or for young apprentice geisha girls.

Beautiful medium weight royal purple textured silk crepe with front and back peony print in shades of taupe accented with blue and green as pictured.

Also known as the 'King of Flowers', the peony is a Japanese flower that is used as a symbol of good fortune, bravery, and honor, while purple is traditionally the color used by royalty.

The red lining symbolizes the color of the sun and energy, vitality, heat, and power in Japanese culture

Open front with no fasteners. The patterned silk crepe sash belt shown will be included as it was in the box where I found this kimono, although this kimono would have been worn with an obi belt.

The floral print area is accented with gold embroidery floss and drops of gold tone metal intermittently throughout.

This fabric drapes beautifully. The sleeves and upper part of the kimono are lined with bright red silk as pictured. The remainder of the interior is double layered purple silk as pictured.

This is from the estate of a retired USA Military officer who brought this kimono back from Japan.
