30s Black Velvet Evening Dress With Colorful Midriff$329.00
This gorgeous evening gown has survived since the 1930s in extraordinarily good condition. It is mostly black silk velvet and has an unusual midriff with a colorful pattern that I can't quite place in terms of its style (Deco, I suppose). The colored elements are embroidered with metallic thread that appears to be applied by machine. We've tried to show in one of the photos that the graceful skirt that hangs close to the body is actually very full. The dress closes with a several snaps plus hooks and eyes on the side of the dress (no zipper). Luckily, the only flaw is to a black silk lining behind the midriff section of the dress. It is starting to shatter, as does so much of this type of silk from the period (since silk was sold by the pound, it was quite common for fabric mills to put lead in it, which causes the deterioration). In this case, we are lucky that it is a minor problem, because this lining is quite thin and not really functional. It could be left as is, replaced, or just removed altogether. The midriff itself and the rest of the velvet fabric are structurally stable, and there are no other apparent flaws on the dress. Of course, there are no labels, but using the measurements, sizing charts indicate it is about a modern size 6-8, or Medium. However, please refer to the measurements for the best guidance regarding actual size.*
