John Wanamaker
30s/40s Black Straw Saucer Hat With Strawberries Detail$195.00
Another wonderful piece I am relinquishing from the Miss Master's Closet archive, this hat is from John Wanamaker's department store in Philadelphia. It is made of black straw and is considered a 'saucer' or 'platter' style because of the ultra wide rim. The special shape and curve of the crown and brim are what give it away as being 1930's, and it would have been worn slightly tilted back on the crown of the head. The base of the brim has a black fabric covered piping that wraps around twice and ends in two wire-filled (so fully bendable to whatever whimsy you desire) pieces. There was originally some sort of decoration glued at the base. I managed to remove most of the glue, then shaped these ends into a curly-q style bow and tacked (sewn) it into place. I then found this lovely little straw strawberry decoration and decided it would be a nice touch, so I sewed that into place at the bow center. Aside from the aforementioned modification, I have also repaired several cracks in the straw brim with fabric pieces (for reinforcement). The straw is slightly brittle, sit is almost 100 years old, so care should be taken when wearing. Only labels read 'J.Wanamaker' and size '22' label (there was originally a third label, now gone), please see phototgraphs for full condition details.
Measurements:
- 16 inch diameter across
- 15 inch depth from front brim to back brim
- approximately 5.5 inch height
- 20.5 inches around inner crown
