1961-1965 Civil War Centennial Souvenir Scarf$45.00
This scarf is perfect for the Civil War memorabilia collector, this printed scarf commemorating the 100 year mark of the Civil War is in excellent condition, with all of the printed colors being bright and vibrant. The scarf is free from holes, tears, or runs, with slight barely visible marks that could wash out. Most likely made in Japan, and it feels like a rayon blend. The scarf is a pale pink, with fluorescent colors, that seem strange, but remind me of vintage souvenir scarves I have seen from Niagara Falls, and other locations. The edging is a soft fringe.
The American Civil War began on April 12, 1861, when Confederate shore batteries under General Pierre G. T. Beauregard opened fire on Union-held Fort Sumter in South Carolina's Charleston Bay. During 34 hours, 50 Confederate guns and mortars launched more than 4, 000 rounds at the poorly supplied fort, and on April 13 U. S. Major Robert Anderson, commander of the Union garrison, surrendered. Two days later, U. S. President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for 75, 000 volunteer soldiers to help quell the Southern "insurrection." Four long years later, the Confederacy was defeated at the total cost of 620, 000 Union and Confederate dead. So, this scarf, which has the years 1961 through 1965 listed on it. is telling you that it was 100 years earlier, in 1861, that marked the beginning of the civil war, which lasted into 1865. It is not saying that the civil war was from 1961 to 1965.
As mentioned earlier, the colors are bright and free of holes, pulls or tears. It measures 30-1/2" square, and in my opinion, it is in extremely wonderful condition. Measurements are 28" x 28. 5".
