1908-1909 Black Beaded Silk Gown$350.00
Beautiful heavy silk gown with gorgeous beading on the bodice. Circa 1908-1909.
Hook and eye closures down the center back. Bodice is lined with cream silk. The rest of the dress is not lined.
Possibly worn for mourning. 8" long train in the back. There is a strap attached to the skirt which would be used to loop around the wrist to hold the skirt up while walking.
One of the loose glass beads had some markings on the back, which looks to be a maker's mark of sorts. It appears to be JS (see photos).
Measurements
37" bust
28" waist
55" front length
63" back length
Condition
Overall sturdy condition, especially considering age. There are a few holes, the largest in the right sleeve that goes through the lining. Also a few small holes in the skirt.
There is some minor bead loss, but the majority is intact.
All hooks sand eyes seem to be present. This was likely worn with some kind of high collar, though I do not know if it was attached or if the gown was made to be worn with interchangeable ones.
Wearable with extra care but likely best for study or display.
