Vintage Tommy Hilfiger

Known for its classic American cool style, Tommy Hilfiger is an American fashion pioneer. One of the first brands to mix both pop culture and Americana, it became a global breakout star in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Designer Tommy Hilfiger moved to New York in 1979 to pursue a career in fashion design, and launched his namesake line in 1985 where he focused on menswear. To launch Tommy Hilfiger the team bought a self-promotional billboard in Times Square stating Tommy Hilfiger was the next big thing. It worked.

In the early 1990s, hip-hop artists and celebrities embraced the oversized version of Hilfiger apparel, especially the wares emblazoned with the preppy white, red and blue logo became popular. Sales peaked when rapper Snoop Dogg wore an oversized Tommy Hilfiger t-shirt during a Saturday Night Live performance.

Rumor has it that his success got him snubbed by the fashion elite. However, no one can deny the success of Tommy Hilfiger on the impact it had globally as one of the most popular brands in modern fashion history.

Tommy Hilfiger’s popularity is largely tied to its vintage denim, especially vintage denim shorts; many life-long fans still seek out vintage button-ups and vintage crewneck sweaters. These classics will never go out of style.
