Victorian French Jet Crepe Earrings

Lovely French Jet (black glass) "crepe" earrings, possibly worn for mourning, circa 1889.

Crepe (also called crape) refers to a type of rough textured fabric often used in mourning clothing and veils during the Victorian era. The texture of these earrings is meant to mimic that look.

Gold filled backs and ear wires.

Check the last photo for an image of "crape stone" jewelry from an 1886 B. Altman catalog (available on archive. org).
