Meet Nicole Ross, a vintage seller from Santa, Monica, CA.
What attracted you to vintage? Buying it? Wearing it?
I grew up in the '60s in the San Francisco Bay Area and as a child, my mother took me shopping at a lot of high-end stores like Saks 5th Avenue, I.Magnin, and Joseph Magnin. She loved classic, well-constructed clothing, and accessories that still look good today so my interest stems from her influence.
What inspired you to open your vintage shop?
Most pieces have been in storage so I am curious to see which items hold their value these days and what the market demands.
Tell us a little about your collection? Is it decade specific? Size-specific? Themed in any way?
Since I just joined Thrilling, I’m currently focused on Italian handbags and vintage accessories such as hats, etc. The theme is generally classic and conservative. I also plan to feature clothing, mainly designer labels from the 70s-90s. The color palette leans heavily on blacks, whites/tans, and reds, so really basic foundational colors. Clothing sizes are generally L or XL or size 12-14.
If you could dress any celebrity or public figure (past or present) who would it be?
As much as I love fashion, I can barely dress myself so I probably am not the best person to answer this question!
What is the hardest thing about being a vintage shop owner or collector?
So far, finding like minds who believe in the beauty and value of well-made, well-kept items. I just unearthed a detached fur collar from the '60s that I can't bear to part with at the moment, it's so special.
Why did you decide to join Thrilling?
It was recommended on an online forum. I liked the idea of finding a space where people understand what vintage is and how valuable it can be in terms of quality and sustainability. As the saying goes, they don't make them like they used to.
Is there anything interesting, special we should know about your shop or collection?
Items in my shop have been well-maintained and some have never been used or worn. They are personally curated and ready to wear!
